“I am suitable for freelance?”

“How to become a freelancer?”

“How to develop for a long time after freelance?”

This is a topic that many readers care about.

I recently did an online sharing. I combined my own experience with nearly 50 “freelancers” interviewed in the past to organize a “Getaway Beginner's Guide”. The following is a new release of the draft.

How to judge whether you are suitable for freelance?

After freelance, people often tell me "I want to be a freelancer. Any suggestions?" My advice is often: Before asking "how to do it", first judge whether you are suitable.

So far, I have interviewed 50 freelancers, and the number of freelancers who have been in contact has broken.

I find that there are still many commonalities among those who are free. Here are a few points that are "especially suitable for freelance" and "particularly not suitable for freelance work". You can check your position and judge whether you are suitable.

Particularly suitable for:

1. "All-rounder": The ability is relatively comprehensive, not willing to be limited to a certain type of function in the company, always want to play their own value as much as possible, can not wait to contract the entire department.

2. "Good business": I want to get involved in other departments. Once you see that the other department is not doing enough work, and you are just capable of doing better, but because of the limitations of the position, you can not intervene, it becomes anxious.

3. "Like a lone person": I don't like complicated interpersonal relationships and too frequent workplace socializing. I like to be a person and work more efficiently.

Especially not suitable for:

1. Not self-discipline: Even if it is a job, I like to drag it to the last moment. A bunch of plans have been developed but never implemented.

2. Fear of taking responsibility: I am afraid that when the team is determined, planning, and responsible, when you encounter responsibility, you can push it. If you have problems, you will always want someone to help yourself.

3. Poor resistance to stress: It is easy to collapse when you encounter difficulties in work. You can't accept high-intensity overtime or never work overtime.

How many guns did you get after reading?

If you are not in the list that is not suitable now, don't be discouraged. Suitable and unsuitable are reversible. As long as you are willing to take the time and energy to practice your exercise, now people who are "especially unsuitable" for freelance career may become "one day." Especially suitable for people - as long as you are worried about yourself.

What preparations and tests do you need before you are freelance?

If you have some basic qualities to be a freelancer, don't worry about it. In case you can go to work, use your spare time to do some preparatory work and test before formal freedom to judge whether you really are. Suitable for freelance.

1. Determine your free career direction, talk to freelancers in this direction, and see what their current status is.

Before I decided to be a freelancer, I spent half a year working while looking for a freelance career. At the beginning, because the direction was very vague, I began to consult with friends who didn’t go to work. I knew what they were doing when they didn’t go to work, and what they depend on to support themselves.

In the process, I not only gradually clarified what I will do in the future, but also absorbed many useful suggestions from these non-workers.

2. At least half a year in advance, consciously expand and accumulate the resources and contacts of your customers who are about to move freely.

There are two types of people who have successfully embarked on a freelance career. One is that when they go to work, they have already accumulated enough customers and contacts in the direction of freedom. These resources can be transformed into income to support themselves.

The other type is freelance skills, but there are not enough people in the field of skills, which requires paving the way for future freelance.

For example: I recently interviewed a sister who started a flower art studio after graduating from a university.

She likes flowers from a young age. She has made her own floral works in a circle of friends since she was a junior. She has done 3-4 part-time jobs in the busiest time, and will know some customers by selling flowers during the holidays, or participate in some art, photography, fashion fields. activity. These activities are all related to “beauty”, and many of the people who participate in these activities may be potential customers who like flowers.

Today, three years later, she has established her own floral brand and has a relatively stable customer base. Now, her most stable client is the one who met at the Shanghai Fashion Week in college. (I will shoot her in the next interview video. If you are interested, you can look forward to it)

3. Start saving money, save enough for you to survive in the future, even if you don’t earn a penny, you can survive for half a year.

The amount of deposit directly determines how long you can stay in the most unstable state of freelance.

When most people start to work in a freelance, they will face a sudden drop in income. If your deposit is not enough to support you for more than half a year, you may do a lot of chores and dislikes to make money, so that you can neither Focus on your freelance career and enjoy the freedom of freelance.

In the long run, a vicious circle is easy to stick to and go back to work.

4. Create a personal brand in the circle of friends and social networking sites in advance, telling you about your skill points and the direction of freedom.

In fact, shaping the "personal brand", Sisi is better at me. She had an article devoted to this before. I think it is very well written. I will share it in the public number next week.

For freelancers, if no company endorses it for themselves, it is even more necessary to establish a “personal brand” and constantly display their works, ideas and personalities on social networks, so that when others mention something, they will be the first. I think of you.

After freelance, I opened a new micro-signal, dedicated to the community, and often shared freelance-related things in my circle of friends, po's own text/photographs.

Later, when many people mentioned freelance work, they would think of me first. When friends of friends want to find writers and photographers, they will also recommend it to me. These are all "personal brands" that have played a role.

After completing the above preparations, you can start the formal pre-professional test.

1. Revenue test: First take the free direction as a sideline development, test how much income your free direction can bring in a month.

It is recommended that the sideline income should exceed at least one-third of the salary, and then consider freelance employment. Of course, the higher the sideline income, the better, so the initial stage of freelance work will be relatively easy.

This is my personal experience. I had a good income when I went to work, so I didn’t have too much demand for the sideline income. I could earn thousands of dollars in a sideline job in a month, and I was anxious to think about freelance.

But when the income of the freelances fell sharply in the first few months, I was anxious to start looking around for things.

At that time, as long as it was a thing that brought in income, I tried it all over, but in fact, many things, both delaying the business and consuming energy, the key is still not making any money.

Looking back now, I was not short of money at the time. I just didn't like the feeling of "declining income". It made me wonder if I could stick to it on the road of freelance.

2. Self-discipline test: Set yourself a short-term plan and ask yourself to do one thing at a fixed time every day to see if you can stick to it.

Before, a reader gave me a manuscript, saying that before setting a freelance career, I set myself a goal of self-learning piano and verify my self-discipline. She asked herself to practice a two-hour piano every day after work.

At first, she was not self-disciplined. She only used a few hundred dollars of hand-rolled piano to practice. She said to herself, if she can hold on to the bomb for 2 months, she will buy an electric piano for herself.

Later, she really insisted on practicing with the piano for 2 months and bought an electric piano for herself. Now she has also resigned to become a freelancer.

3. Personal Brand Testing: Verification of the shaping of personal brands on social networks in the past, how much exposure and conversion can be generated

Before I was freelance, I posted several interviews on the Internet that didn't go to work. I found that the exposure was quite high. Many articles can be recommended on Douban. The first pageview is hundreds of thousands.

And with the continuous exposure, various resources such as advertisers, publishers, and media have come to take the initiative to come to me to talk about cooperation. This has given me a lot of confidence and strengthened my determination to be a freelancer.

After freelance, how to develop for a long time?

If you passed the tests in the previous steps and are interested in freelance, then I will talk to you about the experience of my own experience and interviewees: how to be long after becoming a freelancer The development of the land?

1. Change the mentality of office workers and overcome anxiety in economic income

First of all, we must do a good job in psychological construction at the beginning and change the mentality of office workers. Not going to work means that no one pays you every month, you need to find customers and find a source of income.

Most people will start to panic after a month of freedom: in the past, wages have been paid every month, and deposits in bank cards have been rising. In the first few months after going to work, this rising curve will definitely become flat or even decline. Anxiety is inevitable.

If you use this kind of anxiety well, it will become your driving force, let you work harder to set goals and work hard. But if you are overwhelmed and overwhelmed yourself, it will be counterproductive.

My own way of overcoming my anxiety is to set a financial short-term and medium-term growth goal. For example, it is enough to earn the basic living expenses in the first three months. I will try to catch up with the wages in the last three months, and start half a year later. More than the wages for work.

Then follow the goal to step forward the things to do every month, to do things when you are anxious, and not to give yourself time to worry.

Facts have proved that with the accumulation of time, things that have been done in the early stage have begun to produce results, and a little bit has turned into income. You will become more confident about yourself and anxiety will be alleviated a little.

2. Extend the source of income as much as possible in the first few months, and lock in vertical targets in the next few months.

In the first few months of freelance work, if you are not sure which one is the field you want to deepen in the future, you can try the income-related things related to your freelance career and make a statistical table of income sources. .

After a few months, I will look at my main source of income and input-output ratio, as well as the degree of interest, and then make a choice, and then deepen in the vertical direction.

The ambitions of freelancers are actually quite big. They want to do this, but they want to do that, and they want to learn that, but the limited time and energy can not allow you to do anything. After all, a person can only do one thing in the same period of time. The result of everything you want to do is that you can't do anything well.

So you can allow yourself to try as much as possible in the early stages, but after trying for a while, you must make trade-offs and choose key areas to plow.

3. Practice self-discipline and cultivate healthy work and rest

The body is the capital of freelancers. Many people are free to indulge in the future because they are not in charge. They don’t sleep very late at night, and they start at noon the next day. The three meals are irregular. In the long run, not only the body is prone to problems, but also psychologically. Easy to go wrong. I am not doing very well at this point. It is the part that needs to be overcome this year.

I have seen many people who have returned to the workplace after a period of free time. Most people are not capable of having problems. Instead, self-disciplined habits lead to a series of vicious circles that tidy up the body and mind. People even got depression.

And those who are positive and freelancers have an amazing self-discipline and regular work. There is a freelance journalist who travels abroad halfway through the year and half of the time in the country. When he travels outside, he gets up at 7 am every morning to read work, 4 o'clock in the afternoon, communicate with people at night or watch movies, go to bed at 11 o'clock on time. Thunder does not move.

4. Go out to socialize regularly to avoid long-term work alone

Freelance is most afraid of being alone and not communicating with others, especially when you are at work or whose mentality is not so healthy, you should go out and see people.

For a while, because I was doing things for a long time, my mind almost collapsed. Then I set a rule for myself: I went out at least 1-2 times a week. Can be a friend, can also participate in activities, or meet netizens.

After following this plan, I found that the negative emotions of a person's work began to ease.

When I used to work in a company, my home was a place to regain energy. But when the home became your office, going out to socialize would become a way of decompression.

5. Be busy and continue to learn new things, self-charging

After freelance, no company or boss gives you a clear direction, and no company regularly organizes employee training to let you learn new skills. At this time, in order not to be completely out of touch with the workplace, you must develop a learning plan and learn new skills. .

These skills are not only likely to become your sideline in the future, but also become your personal plus points.

After I was freelance, I not only did writing and self-media, but also self-learned video clips, and I shot + edited an interview video.

At the end of last year, I noticed that the development of vlog was very rapid. I began to learn to edit and plan vlogs myself, which made my self-media content more abundant. When the market for short videos really developed in China, it would not be the one. The person who fell.

6. Develop short, medium and long-term goals for yourself

To be free for a long time, a clear goal is very important. With the goal, you can arrange your life and work well, and have the motivation to get up every day. It won't be like a headless fly.

Set yourself a long-term goal, then break down the long-term goal into a medium-term goal and a short-term goal, and refine it into daily work step by step, so that you don't feel lost when you are half free.

In a sense, the "freedom" of freelance is based on some very anti-human behavioral habits. Such as self-discipline, delayed satisfaction, restraint, super self-control...

If you read these and you want to be a freelancer, I can only say: masochistic, welcome to the pit. When you experience the hardships of freelance, you will definitely cherish the hard-won "freedom."
